Distinguishing Between Concepts That Are Often Confused
I distinguish "exhibitionism" from "flashing" and from the concept of public nudity.
Exhibitionism involves the idea of taking pride in one's body, and betraying this pride in certain ways such as exercise and nutrition, but most importantly by "exhibiting" your pride in your body by perhaps wearing slightly more "daring" clothing than is the norm, although staying completely within legal bounds. A female who takes pride in her body might choose to *exhibit* her hard work by wearing slightly shorter skirts, or skirts with a higher slit up the side, or bathing suits that are slightly more skimpy. A male in a similar way might wear slightly more form fitting shirts, and find ways to "exhibit" his hard work that may appear daring but yet be entirely risk free from arrest by law enforcement ("dancing within one's chains," as the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote).
Flashing in the context in which it usually appears involves the goal of "shocking" the viewer, or perhaps "pleasing" the viewer, depending upon the psychology of the individual "flasher". It usually involves the genitals with males and the breasts with females, although it always appears in the context of the flasher being aware that he/she is running the risk of arrest. It really does not at all involve the concept of taking pride in one's body that exhibitionism does.
The concept of "public nudity" can be reduced to a question: "If you saw a completely nude male or female in a crowded public place in which everyone else was clothed, what would you conclude?" Probably:
1) This person is crazy, and needs psychological help.
2) This is a fraternity or sorority initiation.
3) The situation is staged, and there is a photographer somewhere immediately close by snapping pictures for a web site.
The appeal to the person viewing the photographs involves the shock and novelty of the situation. The artificiality of the situation however makes the concept entirely devoid of the taking pride in one's body *exhibited* by the practice of the true exhibitionist. While the model herself may be an exhibitionist (which is why she took the job), the situation is not natural and does not depict the joyful and carefree mind-set of the casual exhibitionism undertaken on a daily basis by the typical exhibitionist staying within legal bounds (although it is revealing to note that in some countries such as Germany it is NOT against the law to be nude in a public place. If you would like to see nude in public situations in the U.S., where the model and photographer are TRULY running the risk of arrest, just get access to on of the sites in our mainpage.
